Literacy

Literacy is a powerful form of communication that includes reading, writing, and spelling. These skills are essential for a child’s overall development and long-term success — influencing not only academic achievement, but also communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Strong literacy skills also open doors to future education and career opportunities.

Literacy Assessment and Support at Words of Wonder

At Words of Wonder, we offer literacy assessments to identify your child’s strengths and challenges. We provide therapy to support learners of all ages — from young children to teenagers and even adults. It’s never too late to learn how to read and spell confidently.

Our literacy intervention is based on the Sounds-Write program — a highly structured, evidence-based phonics approach that:

  • Begins with simple words and gradually increases in complexity

  • Focuses on building strong foundations in reading and spelling

  • Follows a step-by-step structure to ensure lasting understanding

  • Is adaptable to each learner's pace and level of development

Unlike the standard school curriculum, which may move too quickly for some learners, our approach is fully individualised. We target the specific areas your child needs help with and progress at a pace that works for them.

Common Literacy Challenges

Some children may experience difficulties in one or more of the following areas:

  • Reading accuracy – trouble sounding out or blending words

  • Reading comprehension – difficulty understanding what has been read

  • Reading fluency – reading slowly or without expression

  • Spelling – challenges writing words correctly or using them in context

  • Written expression – difficulty forming sentences, generating ideas, or organising written work

Literacy Opens Doors

At Words of Wonder, we believe literacy is not just a skill — it’s a key that opens up a world of knowledge, confidence, and opportunity. With the right support, every child (and adult!) can develop the tools they need to succeed.
